Heeeeeeee's Baaaaack!

When we hunt for pets we look at petfinder.com for a shelter animal that is exactly what we want. Just because we are going to save a life (at a reduced price that includes first shots, neutering, and microchipping) doesn't mean we are going to compromise. NO SIR/MA'AM! And so far, we are two for two with perfect pets. (And I am going to have to give credit to Jason for picking out BOTH Mr. Bojangles AND Dooley. Good job, hubs.)

When we got Bojangles he had already been fixed, but when we adopted Dooley he hadn't been fixed yet. They made Jason sign his life away on a document that said we would bring Dooley back to be fixed by the shelter or they would repo him. Yep they threatened to repossess my dog…

Obviously they are trying stop animals from over-producing and filling up the shelter, which is good for them. It was good for us because we didn't have to pay the vet to do it for us (it was included in the $75 adoption fee). The only bad thing is that the shelter is 1.5 hours away. Blech.

So, unfortunately for Dooley, he got dropped off at the shelter Saturday afternoon (where the lady said he was going to go play with the other vaccinated puppies). They are closed Sunday and surgery happens first thing Monday. If we wouldn't have taken him Saturday we would have had to call off work to take him Monday morning and then again to pick him up. We were supposed to pick him up Monday night, but we got a call from the shelter informing us that there had been an emergency come in and that the spay/neuter cases had been bumped to the afternoon… Therefore Dooley would need to stay the night (they  have to watch them for a certain number of hours to make sure they come out of anesthesia OK and that the wound is healing well). My heart broke… I felt so bad that my baby boy had to be in the shelter ANOTHER night AND while he was feeling sick.

I picked up Dooley from the shelter yesterday morning. He is just perfect and acts like nothing happened. While they were checking us out I took him outside to pee before we got in the car, and when we went back in the shelter to pick up the paperwork Dooley didn't hesitate one second about going in. Apparently he liked it there and has no recollection of having his jewels chopped off. As a parting gift they sent us home with two stuffed animals: a lamb and a goat. He LOVES them. Last night he walked around the house in circles just chomping on the lamb, which was all sorts of annoying because there is a squeaker inside. Walk. Chomp. Squeak. Walk. Chomp. Squeak. Walk. Chomp. Squeak. Sometimes it was even Walk. Chop. Double Squeak.

Dooley Dog in the car on the way home.
5 minutes later, passed out with him lamb
(...which used to be white, super soft, and fuzzy... but is now 18-shades of drool. ew.)

When I first saw Dooley playing with the stuff animals I immediately thought, "aaaaaaw. What a cutie wootie, wittle doggie with his wittle lambie." When Jason first saw the stuffed animals he said, "Why did you pick out a lamb and a goat?" (I think he felt they were girly choices.) I informed him that we did not do the picking, they were given to us by the shelter. Then he asked, "Why didn't they give them to Dooley BEFORE the operation… ya know so he could have a little fun, one last time?!" Um. Gross. Our dog hadn't started to hump things, and hopefully now that he has been fixed he won't hump things in the future. But leave it to Jason to corrupt my precious little baby.

The entire time that I was sad for no reason for poor Dooley Dog (Saturday-Tuesday) Jason and the cat enjoyed running the house like the good old days. They enjoyed the quite of not having to yell "DOOLEY NO!" Bojangles enjoyed not having to defend himself. Jason enjoyed not having to "Go Outside?!" They cuddled together on the couch while we watched TV…. Which reminded me EXACTLY why I wanted a dog in the first place. (They are mean to me. They gang up on me. And the leave me out. Just in case you forgot.) While the dog was gone the cat would sniff his stuff and I would say "Bojangles… he is coming back." I don't think he believed me…

When Dooley and I came back home, Bojangles came downstairs, sniffed the dog, and upon sniffing-confirmation that it was, in fact, the SAME DOG, he shot me a look like "Really mom? Really. You brought it back?!"

He is back.

Our family of four is back together. For better or for worse…. Depending on who you ask :)
