First up: KKK HORSE. I was driving home from work the other week and I saw this goodie. What is that you wonder? It is a mini-horse in the back of a truck with a white (KKK, like) hood on. Talk about random. Why was there a mini horse? Why was it in a truck? And finally (and most importantly) why did it have a white KKK hood on?! I have no idea. But it was random. And weird. And, thus, perfect for this post. Ohhhh Texas how you amuse me.
I made the picture EXTRA large so you could really see his KKK hood
Second: BOOGIE WOOGIE. My Nonny sent me this link of some people dancing to the “boogie woogie.” I LOVE this. She said she has watched the video like 20 times and it was the big talk at the senior center. I asked her if she and Poppy used to dance like that. She said, quite emphatically that while she tried she wasn’t very good, but Poppy did and could dance pretty similarly to the guy in the video. I have this feeling Poppy was quite a ladies man… He was a Navy man, who was the model in a few advertisements in his prime, held (and still does, I think) high-jump records at his High School, is an amazing artist, and apparently could dance one hell of a boggie woogie. Refer back to #21 in my Bucket List tab…. Part of me would have LOVED to live back in their day—I think they dressed so cool and who wouldn’t love to do the boogie woogie with their beau?
Third: MAGGIE IS COMING TO VISIT! This week we booked a flight for my cousin Maggie to come and visit us in April. She keeps saying, “I can’t believe I am going to TEXAS.” With “TEXAS” in capital letters like that. I keep thinking “I can’t believe I LIVE in texas.” With “LIVE” in capital letters. I am not sure what she thinks she is going to see, but I hope we don’t disappoint. (Seriously, this blog is about Texas and all you ever see is the cat and food we are making.) Either way we (especially me) are VERY excited to see her. I think Mr. Bojangles is excited for a visitor as well.
Here is pretty Maggie. You will see more of her when she gets here in April!!
Fourth: OX TAILS. Every Christmas Eve my Poppy would make a BIG pot of Beef Soup for dinner. (That was until the family multiplied sooooo much that he had to make like 100 gallons, then he retired.) At my wedding shower my Aunt Luanne collected a bunch of my family’s traditional/famous recipes and printed them on the backs of mini-paintings my Poppy had painted. One of them was, obviously, Poppy’s Beef Soup. Well, seeing as it had been pretty chilly here (relatively speaking) I felt like it was time for a big old pot of yummy goodness. The big problem was finding OX TAILS—which is an ingredient in the soup. Some talking with my dad, and hunting, and I FINALLY found them!! So, Sunday night we had a little bit of Ohio for dinner here in Texas J
Here are a picture of what Ox Tails look like in the grocery store... These are mine, but my dad found some and took a picture to send to me so I would know what to look for, and they looked EXACTLY the same (obvi)
Quick pick of the soup (that I dumped over egg noodles) before I inhaled it!
Proof that it was cold and that warm soup was needed
Fifth: DEVILED EGG HOLDER. Last weekend, Jason and I had one of those “married couple” weekends. Not only did we have the normal activities like an SHSU basketball game and laundry, but we did some shopping. We went to Williams Sonoma to buy out the rest our place settings. We also went to Bed Bath and Beyond and got some really random stuff—a rolling pin, corn cob holders (those little things you stick in the ends of corn cobs that you hold on to when you are eating), a deviled egg holder/carrier, a can opener, etc. Random yes.
Sorry. No picture of the egg holder or the corn cob things... you'll have to use your imagination.
Sixth: DOWN. As in comforters. I LOVE down. If it were up to me (which it is about 39.5% of the time) I would have a feather bed, down pillows, and a big over-stuffed down comforter. Actually, I did, when I was in middle school. It was awesome. Like sleeping on a cloud. Well we got one with our wedding stuff and I busted it out this week because it was cold. Turns out Mr. Bojangles LOVES down comforters. He likes to play and jump on, and run under, the cloud....and then when he is good and tired he likes to pass out on the cloud.
OMG. Seriously so cute, right?!
You can't really tell, but Jangles is on the cloud and Jason is sitting next to it. This was just soo cute I had to post it.
Seventh: BLACKENED. So the other day I tried to make buffalo chicken pizza on the grill. Turns out the grill was on a liiiiiiiiiitle to high. Oops. And so we ended up with BLACKENED buffalo chicken pizza. It kinda looks cool in these pictures, but it DID NOT taste good. Jason was a good hubby (for once) and choked it down and told me it was “OK.” (Seriously, he got major points for not laughing at me and got even more for eating some of it) And, honest, OK was FAR from the truth. Someone (I think gram) got us a light for our grill that is supposed to be coming in the mail next month.... Thank goodness--that way maybe I will see I am burning our dinner before it is too late.
Black. REALLY black.
It kind of looks cool in this picture because you can't tell it was supposed to be dinner.
Eighth: TARHEELS. So the Tarheels aren’t doing so well, but that doesn’t stop Mr. Bojangles from watching. He doesn’t watch tooo much TV because, let’s be honest, he is a cat. But he does like to watch the Tar heels play. Here he is watching Roy Williams—head coach.
Ninth: DEER MEAT. Aka venison. Uncle Gary and cousin Nate went deer hunting earlier this winter and got themselves a big old buck. For part of our Christmas present they sent some venison to us (meaning: mom and herb took it, frozen, on a place from NY to OH and we then took the same frozen package from OH to TX). We have never cooked venison before, so we left it frozen until we could decide what to do. Jason decided to make little round sausage-flavored patties. Put them on a biscuit with some mustard—YUMMMMO. I realize a deer-meat sausage biscuit is really southern, but I guess if you can beat 'em, join 'em, right?! Anyway, there aren’t any finished photos because we ate them all before I could remember to take a picture. There are some in the freezer, maybe I’ll remember to take more then.
Remember when I said Jason HATES when I take his picture for the blog... Welp these picture almost got me killed. Seriously.
This one almost put him over the edge. He said (and by said I mean YELLED. LOUDLY. and MEANLY.) that nobody wants to see him cooking every week. Which is probably true, but that is all we do... cook. eat. sleep. work. repeat. And the blog is REALLY boring if it doesn't have any pictures. So it looks like I will have to continue to risk my life for the blog.
Last but not least, tenth: Jason has started rapping about the cat. I guess we needed some variety in our song selections. These raps are totally off the cuff, they don't go to the tune of any other rap songs, so I guess you would say Jason "freestyles" about the cat. They MIGHT be my favorite Bojanes songs to date... just saying.
Hope you liked my Random Rant (yeah, I know, the name is kinda dumb) and I hope everyone had a FAB weekend.
<3 From Texas
